This is one of the biggest cybersecurity risks that doesn’t get enough attention. Most people think identity theft means someone stealing your credit card, but synthetic identity fraud is much harder to detect because it can combine real and fake information to create an entirely new identity.
The best protection I’ve found is being proactive instead of reactive:
* Freeze your credit with all three major bureaus unless you’re actively applying for credit.
* Turn on transaction and credit monitoring alerts.
* Check your credit reports regularly instead of waiting for something to go wrong.
* Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication to reduce the chance of your personal data being exposed in the first place.
AI isn’t creating the problem by itselfβit’s making identity fraud faster, cheaper, and more convincing. As generative AI improves, monitoring your credit should become as routine as checking your bank account. A few minutes each month can help catch suspicious activity before it turns into a damaged credit score or years of cleanup.
