Reply To: What happens if you file your taxes late?

If I were an American taxpayer, Iโ€™d say this: filing taxes late isnโ€™t something to ignore because penalties start building up quickly if I owe money. The IRS charges extra for both filing and paying late, and interest keeps growing until I clear the balance. If Iโ€™m expecting a refund, itโ€™s less painful, but I still risk losing it if I delay too long. An extension only gives me more time to file, not to pay what I owe. So in my case, Iโ€™d file as soon as I can, even if I need a plan to pay later.
